Kimi got her new pink flourescent forearm crutches yesterday! Both her Physical Therapist and Orthopedist believe she is ready for them. And although she is smiling in the photo, her reaction when she first got them was similar to when she first got her walker. With her walker, she would kick it and refuse to use it. But eventually, she realized she could get from point A to point B much faster, and walk upright, if she used it. Now, she is fine with her walker. With the forearm crutches, she keeps trying to walk with them, holding them up off the floor, rather than using them to help her maintain her balance. And then, when she falls down, she gets frustrated and throws them down. Just like the walker, if we try to show her how to use them correctly, she shakes her head and adamantly says, "No, no, no, no, NO!" (Like, what part of "No" do we not understand??!)
However, I know there is hope; because earlier this evening, when she thought no one was watching, she put them on, and tried walking a short distance with them. Then, she quietly took them off and laid them on a chair. Yes, she is stubborn - a girl after my own heart! But I also know that God gave her that stubborn spirit to help her deal with and rise above the difficult times in the orphanage, as well as the difficult situations that she is bound to face in life, as we all do at some time or another.
Kimi and Elizabeth are getting closer as sisters also. They play together much more, now that Kimi is catching up more and more.

I didn't know she got her crutches! They look like they would be easier to use than the walker. I hope she figures them out soon!
ReplyDeleteMe, too! She still isn't very eager to use them and the Physical Therapist is trying to help her learn how to use them better. It would be SO much easier than the walker - and she could move faster. She is just not too keen on change, which is understandable.
