Day 9 and 10 in China

Yesterday, we made the trek down to Xinhui, about 60 miles south of Guangzhou, to find Elizabeth's finding spot, since we didn't get to visit back in 2004. On the way, we got to see much of the countryside, with lots of rice paddies and tobacco farms. We also passed the "Bullet Train" going in the opposite direction alongside the highway, which was pretty cool! It felt strange to actually be driving down the streets of Xinhui, knowing that Elizabeth's birth family probably lived somewhere near where we were driving. I found myself studying people's faces looking for similar features. We found the area where she was found back on November 2, 2002. Just a little bit of her history which will be important to her someday. Xinhui is beautiful with many palm trees lining the streets. However, the buildings of the town (except for the center of town) were very small and in poor condition. Kind of tells you where the government spends their money. After we got back, we did a little shopping. Then, last evening, we, with some of our travel group, ate dinner at the Cow and Bridge - a Thai restaurant.

Today was CONSULATE DAY! After getting up super early and eating a fast breakfast, we got on the bus and drove to the U.S. Consulate in downtown Guangzhou - a different location than in 2004. I had Kimi dressed in a navy blue dress with little white hearts and white tights. I have attached a photo. We signed the final paper so that Kimi's visa can be issued, and took the oath on her behalf. It is such a relief to be done with all the paperwork for this adoption! We are going to do some more shopping today, and the "red couch" and group photos this evening at the White Swan Hotel. It's going to be strange to, once again, walk into the White Swan hotel. In fact, everywhere we go, I keep thinking how odd it is to really be back here again, seeing all these familiar sites, when I never dreamed I would be.

By the way, Kimi is continuing to come out of her shell more and more. The attached video speaks for itself. If you look closely, you will see that little dimple on her right cheek. Hard to believe this is the same girl who, just 9 days ago, wouldn't even make eye contact and just sat and rolled her eyes. Enjoy!
